City’s Modernization Efforts Deliver Major Environmental and Financial Benefits
In a move that prioritizes both sustainability and cost savings, Funchal has completed a major project to modernize the lighting systems in its key road tunnels. The initiative, which involved an investment of €284,000 (plus VAT), aims to improve energy efficiency, reduce costs, and lower the city's carbon footprint.
LED Lighting Brings Remarkable Energy and Costs Reductions
The modernization project, which replaced outdated lighting with state-of-the-art LED systems, has already delivered impressive results. In the Engenheiro Ornelas Camacho tunnel, energy consumption has been reduced from 231,642 kWh per year to just 57,143 kWh. This represents a 75.3% reduction in energy use, saving 174,499 kWh annually. The switch has also cut CO2 emissions by 79.75 tons per year - equivalent to the carbon absorption of 3,703 trees or 87,100 square meters of forest. Financially, the city now saves €28,689 annually on energy costs in this tunnel alone.
The Avenida Calouste Gulbenkian tunnels, currently undergoing similar upgrades, are expected to see energy savings of over 75% as well. The consumption in the ascending tunnel will drop to 16,871 kWh annually, and in the descending tunnel to 22,990 kWh. These changes will yield an additional savings of around €4,340 per year.
